About the Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN)

The Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN) is the premier professional association for soil scientists in Nigeria, formed in 1969 by a group of dedicated scientists. The society’s main aim is to promote the knowledge and practice of soil science in the country.

The SSSN is dedicated to fulfilling a broad set of objectives:

  • To foster the pursuit and understanding of soil science in Nigeria.

  • To disseminate knowledge of soil science through publications, demonstrations, symposia, seminars, and lectures.

  • To promote the interest of soil scientists and farmers.

  • To collaborate closely with related societies both nationally and internationally.

  • To promote proper soil management for sustainable agricultural production and environmental wholesomeness

Core Role and Contributions

Since its inception, the SSSN has had a positive impact on Nigeria’s economy through the application of scientific methods to the utilisation of the nation’s land resources, particularly in soil conservation and fertility management.

The Society plays a significant role in national development by focusing on key areas, including:

  • Inorganic and organic fertilizer usage and development.

  • Soil testing, classification, and mapping of soils.

  • Land clearing and development.

  • Soil conservation through erosion, desertification, and pollution control.

  • Manpower development and training in soil science at all academic levels, and capacity building for practicing soil scientists.

In 2019, the Society celebrated its 50th anniversary. Among its greatest achievements, the SSSN successfully prosecuted the bill for the establishment of the Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS), a foremost institute in the country. The Society was duly registered as a corporate body with the Corporate Affairs Commission on December 9, 1984.

Many distinguished soil scientists have given leadership to Soil Science Society of Nigeria from its inception to date. Officers of the Society are elected at the annual general meeting for a period of two years which is however, renewable for a final term of another two years. The case of the leadership of Prof Victor Chude who served for fourteen (14) years remains the longest serving president. Under his watch as President, the bill for the establishment of Nigerian Institute of Soil Science (NISS) was started and successfully prosecuted. In all there has been Eight (8) Presidents since 1971 to date. Quality leadership has been responsible for the steady growth of the society.
