Its mission is to advance the science of soil, promote the sustainable use and management of Nigeria’s soil resources, and foster collaboration among soil scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders.
Membership is open to individuals with academic qualifications or professional experience in soil science, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, or other related disciplines. There are different categories, including Student, Full (Ordinary), and Fellow.
A Fellow of the SSSN (FSSSN) is the highest honor and membership category, conferred upon distinguished members who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of soil science and the society.
The NISS is the statutory regulatory body established by the Nigerian government (Act No. 2 of 2017) to regulate the practice of Soil Science in Nigeria. The SSSN is the professional society, and they often collaborate closely on matters of soil research, policy, and professional development.
